The Art of Being Rooted in Self, Established in the Soul

Discovering Svastha

The Essence of Svastha

Svastha (svaa-sstaa) is a profound Sanskrit term that embodies the essence of well-being. Derived from the roots "Sva" meaning "who you really are," and "Stha" meaning "to be stable in," Svastha signifies being fully established and rooted in oneself. It is a state of good health that is deeply anchored in the soul. When we are in svastha, we rest in the unchanging center of who we are, which makes us feel good, at home, and at ease in our bodies. This state nurtures compassion and empathy, allowing us to truly ask ourselves, "Who am I, really?" and to know the answer no matter where we are.

A Tale of Two Medicines: Western and Ayurvedic

Western medicine and Ayurveda offer contrasting yet complementary approaches to health. Western medicine often embodies a more masculine energy: "Tell me what hurts, I’ll fix it." It focuses on diagnosing and treating specific ailments, providing immediate relief through intervention. In contrast, Ayurveda embraces a more feminine energy: "What are you going through? I’ll sit with you." It takes a holistic approach, seeking to understand the whole person and the context of their life.

The Philosophy and Science of Ayurveda

Ayurveda is a rich tapestry woven from science, religion, and philosophy. The word "religion" here refers to beliefs and disciplines conducive to states of being where the doors of perception open to all aspects of life. In Ayurveda, truth is synonymous with Being, Pure Existence, and the Source of life. It is a science of truth as it is expressed in life.

Ayurveda teaches that a human being is a microcosm, a universe within themselves, reflecting the cosmic forces of the external environment, the macrocosm. Health and "dis-ease" are viewed holistically, considering the inherent relationship between individual and cosmic spirit, individual and cosmic consciousness, energy, and matter. According to Ayurvedic teachings, every human being has four biological and spiritual instincts: religious, financial, procreative, and the instinct toward freedom. Balanced good health is the foundation for the fulfillment of these instincts.

The Healing Wisdom of Ayurveda

Ayurveda's primary goal is to help healthy individuals maintain their health and to assist those who are dis-eased in regaining their health. It is a medical-metaphysical healing life-science, often referred to as the mother of all healing arts. The practice of Ayurveda is designed to promote human happiness, health, and creative growth.

One of the most empowering aspects of Ayurveda is its emphasis on the individual's capability for self-healing. Through studying Ayurvedic teachings, anyone can acquire the practical knowledge of self-healing. By achieving the proper balance of all energies in the body, the processes of physical deterioration and disease can be impressively reduced.

Embracing Svastha

In a world that often pulls us in many directions, discovering svastha is a journey back to ourselves. It is about being rooted in who we truly are, regardless of the external circumstances. This state of being enables us to navigate life with a sense of ease, compassion, and empathy. As we embrace the wisdom of Ayurveda, we learn that health is not just the absence of disease but a dynamic state of balance and harmony within and around us.

The path to svastha is a journey of self-discovery, self-healing, and profound well-being. By integrating the principles of Ayurveda into our lives, we can cultivate a deeper connection with ourselves and the universe, ultimately achieving a state of health that is truly rooted in the soul.
